Gear Care 101
How to clean, store, and maintain your toys so they last longer and stay safe to use. A few minutes of care after each session keeps your gear performing and your body protected.
Most men skip gear care. Then the toy degrades, they wonder why it feels different, and they throw it out earlier than they should have. Proper care takes three minutes. Here’s what it looks like.
Clean After Every Use
Non-negotiable. Clean before first use and after every subsequent use. Bacteria don’t care how tired you are.
Silicone, Glass, Metal
Wash with mild soap and warm water. These materials are non-porous, which means they don’t harbor bacteria the way porous materials do. For deep cleaning, silicone and metal can be boiled for 3–5 minutes, run through the dishwasher (top rack, no detergent), or wiped with a 10% bleach solution and rinsed thoroughly. Glass can be boiled or run through the dishwasher.
ABS Plastic
Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, or use a dedicated toy cleaner. Don’t submerge if the toy has a motor—check the manufacturer’s guidance on waterproofing. ABS is non-porous and easy to maintain.

Drying and Storage
Dry completely before storing. Moisture trapped with a toy promotes mold and bacterial growth. Air dry on a clean cloth, or pat dry and leave out until fully dry before putting away.
Store toys separately when possible—especially silicone toys, which can react with other materials if stored in contact over time. Soft pouches or individual storage bags work well. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from heat.
When to Replace
- Surface changes — tacky, sticky, or rough texture means the material is breaking down. Replace it.
- Cracks or chips — especially on glass or hard plastic. Compromised surfaces harbor bacteria and can cause injury.
- Smell that doesn’t go away after cleaning — the material is degraded or contaminated.
- Motor issues — inconsistent vibration, charging problems, or failure to hold charge in rechargeable toys.
Lube Residue
Silicone lube leaves a residue that soap and water alone may not fully remove. For silicone-lubed toys (glass, metal), a small amount of dish soap and warm water works. For any toy, a dedicated toy cleaner is the cleanest solution—formulated specifically to break down lube without degrading materials.
The Short Version
Clean after every use with mild soap and warm water. Dry completely. Store separately in a pouch or bag. Replace when the surface changes. That’s it. Your gear will last and your body will thank you.
